Education

Brownfield and Terry County offer the best in education for your children and your employees’ children. Brownfield ISD is a PreK - 12 district and competes in UIL events at the 3A Division 1 level. The District has four campuses, as well as a brand new Administration Building.

Colonial Heights is the Pre-K campus, offering quality early childhood learning experiences. The building also houses the District’s daycare program. This program offers an excellent daycare option for employees of the District.

Oak Grove houses grades K-5 in a large building that has a separate wing for each grade level, so there are no worries about the older children being around the younger ones.

Brownfield Middle School is in a newly refurbished building and is comprised of 6th grade - 8th grade students. The campus has a library and learning labs. Students are also introduced to the various Career and Technology Education (CTE) programs available in the district.

Brownfield High School is in a new and eye catching building, completed in 2022. This building is truly a showpiece for Brownfield. Along with its modern look, the building has an amazing CTE wing which features welding, auto mechanics, building trades, pharmacy tech, patient care technician, and other programs. BISD is constantly looking at the workforce needs in the area and expanding their offerings in the CTE fields. Students can graduate from Brownfield certified and ready to hit the work force in many fields. BHS also partners with South Plains College for free dual credit programs. Each year many seniors graduate with an Associates Degree from SPC before even taking part in their high school graduation.

The Fine Arts Department is top of the line and has earned many awards in band, choir, drama, yearbook, and art. The Fine Arts teachers are dedicated to ensuring that students are exposed to as many opportunities as is possible.

Athletics are also well represented at BHS. A great Field House located adjacent to Cub Stadium, houses the football, baseball, softball, and track teams. A tennis building adjacent to the tennis courts houses one of the most storied tennis programs in the State of Texas. State Championships are won regularly by the tennis team. Basketball is also an award-winning program with many State Championships and Playoff appearances to show for their work. A facility like none in the area, connected to the BHS building is home to the basketball and and volleyball teams, and is often the site of playoff games in the area.

In the County, Meadow ISD, located 12 miles north of Brownfield is a PreK-12 district. They compete in six-man football and at the UIL 1 A level.

South of Brownfield is Wellman-Union ISD. WU is also a PreK-12 district, and also competes in six-man football and UIL 1 A. WU has a newer building, completed in 2017.

All County schools are top performers in academics and seen as pace-setter schools in the area.

Brownfield, Texas is but a 40 minute drive from Texas Tech University

South Plains College is located in Levelland, Texas. SPC offers 100+ Associate Degree Programs (including employee training programs) with a campus enrollment of 9,563 students.

Local Workforce

Workforce in Terry County

The workforce in Terry County fluctuates, much like every other area of the state. What sets Brownfield and Terry County apart is the commitment Brownfield ISD has to graduating students ready to hit the workforce.

BISD has a fantastic Career and Technology Education (CTE) program and continues to add to their offerings. Currently, BISD is graduating students certified in:

BISD is also working to partner with others to offer many of these career options as Adult Education Classes at night.

BISD partners with an area Junior College (South Plains College in Levelland) to also graduate students with an Associates Degree at the same time they are graduating from high school. Dual Credit classes are free and there are many students who take advantage of this opportunity.

Entertainment

Entertainment is a large part of the modern concept of work-life balance. Most businesses today know that a happy workforce is a retained workforce. Most also know that wages alone will not keep employees happy.

For good reason then, many companies seeking to expand look at a a cities ability to provide things to do for their workforce.

Family Entertainment in Brownfield

Being a rural community, as you would expect, we do not have the major attractions such as you would find in a bigger city. But this does not mean that family entertainment is not important in Brownfield.

Brownfield is home to one of the most modern and up-to-date aquatic centers around. This large pool features two tube water slides, a deep end with a diving board, a lazy river for floating, and a zero-entry area for lounging or watching your little ones play. Certified lifeguards are constantly on duty. The center is available for rental for wonderful summer evening parties.

Adjacent to the aquatic center, there is a 2,500-square-foot skateboard park, complete with ramps and risers to challenge all levels of skateboarders.

A playground is nearby with colorful play equipment that is maintained regularly by top-of-the-line park staff to ensure it is safe for all. The playground is completely fenced in, also for your kiddos’ safety.

Coleman Park

Coleman Park covers dozens of acres with rolling hills and large trees. There is an award-winning 18-hole disc golf course which is very popular and is host to tournaments throughout the year. An amphitheater with a stage, meeting rooms, and covered seating is available for rental and is home to the Terry County Harvest Festival in October of each year, as well as numerous other events.

A beautiful new Brownfield Sports Complex is just up the hill in the park with state-of-the-art facilities. This Complex plays host to numerous softball and baseball tournaments throughout the year, as well as being the home of Brownfield’s own active Little League softball and baseball.

There is a large soccer/football field in the park, complete with seating and lights. A sand volleyball court and lighted basketball courts can also be found in the park.

An RV park is adjacent to the park which provides free hookups for overnight stays.

Parks and Recreation in Brownfield

There are many smaller parks and walking trails throughout Brownfield, with playgrounds and other amenities to provide outdoor fun for families.

Gillham Pond, also locally known as “The Duck Pond” is a large playa pond on the east side of town. The Parks and Recreation crew regularly maintain this pond, as well as keep it stocked for “Catch and Release” fishing. There are grills and picnic areas, as well as a nearby playground with restroom facilities. Enjoy The Duck Pond when it becomes home to hundreds of ducks and geese each year during migration.

The Terry County Heritage Museum, which is housed in the former home of Brownfield’s namesake, Dick Brownfield, is one the most interesting historical museums in the region. With items dating to the early days, when the Native Americans roamed the land in West Texas, the museum takes visitors back to a time when the economy was driven by cattle. There are many examples from Brownfield’s first days as a city, as well as the original Terry County Jail. No one would want to spend the night in that place!

Brownfield’s first depot has been moved on-site, and houses a chuck wagon, a fancy buggy, as well as a freight wagon, and an always popular fire truck. (You can ring the bell!)

Faith and Fun

As a community that takes pride in family time, Brownfield residents have not forgotten about what matters most: Faith.

The many local churches in Brownfield regularly host family events to bring families together and encourage community and strengthen ties. Many churches have Wednesday evening events featuring supper, along with activities for kids and adults alike.

Special Events

The Brownfield Chamber of Commerce hosts many events throughout the year to foster spending money locally, as well as bringing people together to build that strong sense of community you find so readily in rural communities.

The Chamber hosts running events throughout the year, as well as business mixers. The Chamber recognizes a Business of the Quarter each quarter and recognizes Terry County’s finest at the Annual Banquet each year.
